WHAT WE BELIEVE
The establishment of Jesus’ Church was set forth on the day of Pentecost in Acts chapter 2. A careful examination of the New Testament, accurately translated from the original languages, reveals God’s expectations of His followers. The aim of the Church of Christ is not to be different, but to be faithful to Jesus teachings and examples set forth by Him and His apostles as they established congregations of His faithful followers.
The church of Christ believes in the act of baptism by immersion as was demonstrated by Jesus Christ in the New Testament. Baptism is an act that symbolizes the believer’s faith in the entire Word of God, including the crucifixion, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The act of baptism is a symbolic death to sin, the burial of a person’s old ways, and resurrection to walk in the newness of life as a child of god.
The Church of Christ follows the pattern of the New Testament church as closely as possible. The idea is simple: Christianity should look like it did in the first century when the apostles were teaching and organizing congregations. Worship is modeled after New Testament examples. Services include prayer, preaching from the Bible, congregational singing, the Lord’s Supper taken each Sunday, and a collection for church work. Churches of Christ sing a cappella, without instruments. Each congregation is independent and self-governing. There is no central headquarters or governing body. Leadership is made up of elders and deacons, whose roles are explained in the New Testament. We follow Jesus and the teachings of the apostles exactly as described in the New Testament, without adding later traditions or structures that developed centuries afterward.
